Quote of the Day: Vicky Tauli-Corpuz

Vicky Tauli Corpuz, chair of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples, on how multinational companies are blocking the passage of a U.N. document that would recognize the rights of indigenous peoples:

“[These firms] were against the declaration because they would like [to keep] their business interests in countries where indigenous peoples wanted to assert sovereign rights on their territories. They were afraid that the declaration would stop them from extracting the resources in indigenous peoples’ communities,” she said.

  1. What would help Ms. Tauli’s cause is to COMMUNICATE actual alternative working, operational, profitable enterprises that can be used as CLEAR evidence/demonstration that the people (and politicians) do not need or do not need to put their faith on “disrespectful and greed-oriented” MNCs in order to meet each individual’s hierarchy of needs (as outlined by Maslow).

  2. Hi Anonymous,
You raise a valid point. And there are alternatives out there that do work. But in fairness to her, maybe she brought up suggestions in other forums but not in this instance where she was quoted.

    Thanks 🙂
