Hey you, Manila based readers. Are you looking for interesting things to do? Then check out the following activities of Philippine Nikkeijin 2007. In case you are wondering, Nikkeijin refers to the descendants of Japanese immigrants to the Philippines (and other countries).
A significant number of Nikkeijins are in the Cordilleras where Japanese workers who were hired to help build Kennon, Halsema, etc. settled and married the locals. Anyways, check out the following events organized by the University of the Philippines Asian Center, the UP Vargas Museum, The Japan Foundation, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Filipino-Japanese Foundation of Northern Luzon, Inc. Our thanks to Michiyo Yoneno-Reyes for sending us the information.
Quote of the Year: “I am an officer of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and at the same time a lawyer. I will not allow myself to trample upon the rights of the accused gentlemen officers and be a party to the denial of their Constitutional rights. And by these, your Honors, I ask to be excused from these proceedings.” — Major Basilio Pooten
***** When I first read the story about Major Basilio Pooten (center) and his refusal to be used as a tool for injustice, I wondered if he is from the Cordilleras but I didn’t have the time to check it out.
Much thanks to Art Tibaldo for these photos of the IMPAKABSAT trade fair at the Festival Supermall in Muntinlupa. Those of you in Manila can still catch it today, the last day of the fair. If you can’t make it, well, watch out for it next year.
For those new to IMPAKABSAT, it is an annual event spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry to promote the Cordillera Region’s many products. The acronym stands for the Cordillera provinces (Ifugao, Mt. Province, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Benguet and Baguio City) and “kabsat” which, as we all know, means sibling/brother/sister in Ilocano as well as in other Cordillera languages. The second photo above shows Godfrey Dominong, DTI-Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Coordinator for Ifugao, wowing shoppers and mallgoers.
Oops we’re late in uploading this photo but it’s better late than never. It shows Jocelyn Dulnuan’s mother, Godeliva Dulnuan, being interviewed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last October. Photo courtesy of Migrante (via the Philippine Reporter).
As of October 26, 2007, a total of $29,912.o2 was raised for the Dulnuan Fund according to the Jocelyn Dulnuan Support Committee (JDSC).
Congratulations to the following who landed in the top ten in the Criminologist Licensure Examination held last October 2007. For a complete list of board passers, click here.
Top 3. Hanser Puddunan Naboye — University of the Cordilleras (88.50)
