In a news conference held late Thursday, Insp. Guy Slater said charges had not been laid in the death of Arcelie Sombrito de Laoagan.
“What we’re trying to determine now is the role this man played in the homicide,” said Slater, quoted in the Calgary Sun.
He would not provide details on the man’s arrest except to say he was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon. The man is not believed to have had a previous relationship with Laoagan.
The 40-year-old woman’s identity was confirmed by Calgary’s medical examiner Thursday using fingerprints provided by her family, who could not identify Laoagan due to the severe beating she received on her face.
Police have not revealed the cause of Laoagan’s death or whether her attacker sexually assaulted her. They were said to be reviewing hours of video footage taken by surveillance cameras at various transit platforms.
Women have been warned to stay in well-lit areas at night and stick with groups of people if they are waiting for transit.
Arrangements are being made to have Laoagan’s body sent back to the Philippines, where she is survived by her husband and five sons.
She had been working the evening shift at West Canadian Graphics, a document-scanning company, for just five weeks before her death on Jan. 17.
