Edmonton Sun, 20 January: Friends of a missing Filipina woman working two jobs in Calgary to support her family in her homeland suspect she’s the victim found dead behind a southeast Calgary church.

Arcelie Laoagan, 40, was reported missing by her roommate when she didn’t return home after leaving work at West Canadian at 10 p.m. Thursday.

The blood-soaked body of a woman matching Laoagan’s description was found at 6 a.m. Friday behind the Grace Baptist Church.

A Filipina woman who attends the same Bible study group as Laoagan said friends are assuming the worst. Read the full report here.

cnews.canoe.ca, 21 January: Siblings of Filipino immigrant Arcelie Laoagan are expected to identify her body today, and say they have no doubt their sister is Calgary’s latest murder victim.

Oswald Sombrito and his two sisters, Marlyn Hori and Caroline Maximo, flew to Calgary from Toronto on the weekend after learning about Laoagan’s apparent murder.

“It’s a nightmare,” younger brother Sombrito, 31, said yesterday. “We want justice.” More here.

Calgary Sun: Relatives of a woman found murdered near a northeast LRT station say they are certain the victim is their sister, despite the fact the woman’s face was mutilated beyond recognition.

Cops now say the lack of a conclusive identification has stalled their investigation of this apparently random killing.

Homicide Staff Sgt. Kevin Forsen said police are working with the family of missing Filipino immigrant Arcelie Laoagan, but have been unable to determine whether she is definitively the victim.

“We’ve exhausted all conventional means and we’ve been unable to identify her,” said Forsen, adding police are hoping DNA testing will reveal the answer. Full story here:

Calgary Herald, 21 January: The family of a woman found dead near a C-Train station are calling the person who killed their sister “evil,” and the pastor at her church says the tragedy shows the city is changing.

At a downtown restaurant, the shock of the news of her death was marked on the faces of Arcelie Laoagan’s brother, Oswald Sombrito, and sisters Marlyn Hori and Caroline Maximo.

What happened to Laoagan was “shocking and horrible,” they told the Herald. Read more.

Police believe the woman, identified by family as Arcelie Laoagan, 40, was slain in a random attack and have issued a warning to Calgary women to avoid deserted transit platforms and bus stops, and to stay in well-lit areas or in groups when out at night. Full story here.
