Congratulations to Benigno Lingan Borja of St. Louis University (SLU) for making it to the top ten (8th place) in the geodetic engineering board examination held this month, September 2007. Borja obtained an 82.80% score.
How did the Cordillera schools do in this exam? Bad except for SLU. The schools’ passing rates are as follows:
Baguio Central University: 20% (4 out of 16)
Mt. Province State Polytechnic College – Tadian: 0 (0 out of 6)
St. Louis University: 65% (11 out of 17)
University of the Cordilleras: 30% (6 out of 20)
We didn’t realize that MPSPC offers engineering in its Tadian campus. Its administration should rethink its course offerings if this zero passing rate is the rule and not the exception. It is a waste of investment, for both the student and the state, if graduates cannot pass the qualifying test that would enable them to join the ranks of their desired profession.

0 out of 6 passing? That sounds bad. Hmmmm…. maybe I should open up my own school in the Philippines. Schools seem to be one of the few things (or business ventures) that make any money over there…. aside from mall-owners like Henry Sy and beer guys like Mr. Tan, of course.
Hi Wil,
Yup, education has become a business here so school-owners think of profit margins, etc. rather than what’s good for their students. And we’re not only talking about the college level; pre-school “Montessori schools” have sprouted here and there and I’m not sure they are being regulated by the government.
P.S. MPSPC is a state college so it won’t be profit-oriented. But government funds poured into the school would be wasted if its graduates can’t pass licensure exams. In fairness, it is doing well in teacher’s exams as well as criminology exams.
Mabuhay ang SLU! I’m a proud Louisian 🙂 .
