Ano bang meron ang hangin sa Abra at masyadong marahas ang pulitika doon? The latest victim is Abra Representative Luis Bersamin Jr. who was killed December 16 at the Mt. Carmel Church in Quezon City where he attended a niece’s wedding. His bodyguard, policeman Adelbo Ortega was also slain. More information here.
A church is supposed to be a safe place where one can lay one’s guard down but maybe its precisely this sense of safety that makes it easy for political assassins to target their victims. Maybe these killers have been getting pointers from mafia movies where protagonists are killed right after they get out of churches. (Like in the Godfather movies, you know.)
One of the tricks that people with a hidden agenda use to give validity to their schemes is to claim that they speak for people from the margins. This Zeny Gonzales is one such person.
According to news reports, Gonzales is one of those who are collecting signatures to have the Philippine Constitution amended via a peoples’ initiative. A news story by Philippine Star states:
They first called themselves the “Punks 11”. For some reason, they decided to change their designation to the “Sagada 11”. My guess is that the change was meant to catch more public attention.
They were successful in that regard since I got interested in their story when I started hearing of the Sagada 11. But being a good I-Sagada, I was irritated when some of the group’s supporters started calling for a boycott of Sagada. What the heck, they shamelessly appropriate Sagada’s good name and are now smearing the place. Here’s a picture that speaks for itself which I found in this site.
We continue with our listing of people who make us proud. This time, let’s focus on public officers and civil servants whose dedication to their jobs earned the recognition of no less than the Civil Service Commission (CSC). Since its formation, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) has the distinction of having the second highest number of awardees after the National Capital Region. This is quite an achievement considering that CAR has the lowest number of public servants of all the country’s 17 regions.
We have not been following the nursing scandal but one of our commenters (Harold M.) alerted us to the fact that lawyer Cheryl Daytec-Yangot, a native of Besao, Mt. Province, is very much in the midst of this unfolding story.
This got us intrigued so we followed the news and eventually decided to blog about it. From the very start, we’d like to make it clear that Cheryl and her companions who exposed the leakage of exam questions during the June 2006 nursing board are the good guys in this sordid affair.
