Apparently, the indigenous peoples of the world cannot facilitate themselves so the United Nations is appointing a non-indigenous person to “undertake consultations on the proposed UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples”. [Report here.] What a slap in the face.
Incidentally this person is former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide, a man we used to respect a lot but we eventually lost our respect for him ever since he became a tool for the GMA administration.
The good: A tipster-friend sent us this letter from Ifugao Governor-Elect Teddy Baguilat asking his fellow Ifugaos to join him in shaping the province’s future direction. (Note: He no longer says “Yo!”) Continue reading A Tale of Two Politicians→
The Nashman is mad for a good reason. Eh paano ba naman itong kanyang beloved alma mater is going to entomb a tree which is very much alive.
Someone should remind the Reverend Fathers that “a tree looks at God all day, and lifts her leafy arms to pray”. So they will prevent the tree from praying to God if they are going to entomb it. Ayyayay. More details on this bizarre story here.
Well, we wouldn’t want this blog to be Sagada-centric but this article by Gina Dizon on the conflict between iSagadas and a tourist might serve as an example to other municipalities as more and more foreigners are settling in the Cordilleras. It would be interesting to see how this problem will be resolved.
Angry Sagada folk want tourist out; declare him persona non grata By Gina Dizon
Wow! The art of letter writing really bloomed in this past elections, no? We’ve heard about letters being sent by Sagada politicians to each other (but which was also furnished to Sagada voters). We hope to eventually get copies of said letters and to publish them here if they are praiseworthy or “mockworthy”. There’s also an interesting letter sent to our iSabangan kailiyans and a response to said letter by some concerned iSabangans which you can read at the Northern Philippine Times blog.
Here’s a backgrounder for said Sabangan letters: Although he won in Mt. Province, re-electionist Congressman Victor Dominguez lost very badly in the town of Sabangan to his nephew Sabangan Mayor Jupiter Dominguez. Victor’s loss in said town obviously prompted his youth supporters (the Victor Dominguez Youth Brigade) to write a letter to iSabangans which could be summarized as: “Walang utang na loob! Pagkatapos kayong inaruga, binihisan, at pinakain. Ito ang igaganti ninyo kay Victor.”
