The List: More on Biag Gaongen

Do you remember Biag Gaongen? We first mentioned him here as the first (and so far the only) Igorot ballet dancer. Well the kid has been making waves lately so it’s time to blog about him again. In an article in Cebu Pacific’s Inflight Magazine (which we are reprinting below) Biag talks about his indigenous roots and his experiences as Ballet Philippines’ principal dancer. What comes out is the portrait of a young man who is very much rooted to his culture and is properly proud of it. Way to go Biag! Or maybe, “Agbiag ni Biag!”

Truth or Propaganda: Military Nabs Six Students in Sagada?

Six high school students from Tubo, Abra who are studying at the Bangaan National High School in Sagada (photo above and it has a website here) were alleged to have been abducted by the military yesterday, June 22.

If the report is true, then it is another proof that the administration of Gloria a.k.a the Female Version of Gollum is worse than Marcos. If it is a propaganda ploy by the CPP/NPA then it is lame and stupid.

Gina Dizon on iSagadas vs. Tourist

Well, we wouldn’t want this blog to be Sagada-centric but this article by Gina Dizon on the conflict between iSagadas and a tourist might serve as an example to other municipalities as more and more foreigners are settling in the Cordilleras. It would be interesting to see how this problem will be resolved.

Who Owns Our Place Names and Cultural Icons?


When Mang Donald put up a restaurant and named it “Mang Donald’s”, he got sued by Mac Donald’s for trademark violation.

When a coffee company uses the name of our towns and provinces for its coffee products, shouldn’t we also be suing it for taking advantage of our place names? Surely it is not an accident that they are using our place names isn’t it? They are doing it because the names of our towns and provinces (in the pictures above from left: Ifugao Brew, Kalinga Brew, Sagada Brew, Benguet Brew) sound exotic and, in the coffee business, exotic sells. There is also some goodwill attached to our place names (in the same manner that there is some goodwill attached to the MacDonald’s brand) that the company wants to take advantage of.
