Cordi Athlete Breaks National Record

Three cheers to Marie Felice Gallaga for breaking a national high jump record. Kasta man nga kailiyan. By the way, her name may actually be Marla Felice Ellaga because this is the name that’s listed at the Palaro website. Marie/Marla, according to some news reports, is from Baguio City.

Despite training on improvised equipment, an athlete from the Cordillera region broke a six-year-old high jump record at the annual Palarong Pambansa, ABS-CBN Regional Network News reported Sunday.

Marie Felice Gallaga became a standout at the secondary girl’s high jump when she cleared the bar at 161 meters, shattering the record previously set by Mariz Cotoner at 160 meters.

“Sa high jump po natalon ko 161. Ang dati pong record ay si Mariz Cotoner ng Southern Tagalog Region na 160,” Gallaga said.

Gallaga shared her secrets: discipline and determination. “Advice ko lang po sa iba, disiplina lang po,” she said.

Coach Art Alimbuyao said they used a makeshift cross bar for his ward’s training. He added that Gallaga was also well read when it comes to training techniques.

“Equipment po namin dito improvised lang. Ginawa ko lang po yung cross bar. Lagi ko pong pinagbabasa ng mga libro si Marie kasi nadoon po ‘yung ibang manual sa training,” he said.

Gallaga is now making preparations for the upcoming Philippine Olympic Festival to be held in Misamis Oriental.
