Hi Betelnut,
Aba, Carino ka pala ha. Yup, your lolo won all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Pero siguro hindi na-enforce yung decision so the land is still in the hands of the government.

I don't think that Candon was part of Amburayan because its at the Ilocos coast.

Aamin na ako..may dugong Carino ako. Well, sabi-sabi sa akin ng mga kamag-anak ko is that sa clan daw talaga yung CJH, ang nangyari, it's still in the hands of the Phil.

Recognized siya as ancestral land pero the IPRA is not being implemented at all. Siyempre, gobyerno, what do you expect???

P.S. Totoo pala ang chismis sa akin, kapag-anak namin si Robin..dati ayaw kong maniwala..hehe

Was Candon formerly part of the now "defunct" Amburayan?

Talaga ah, didn't know that the Abeyas trace their roots from Candon.

Interesting tidbit about the wife actually owning the land. I think the court recognized the clan's title to the land. Kasi in recognizing Carino's rights what the court did was to apply the indigenous system of land ownership, eh di ba among Ibalois the land ownership system is more of a clan ownership kaya ang lalawak ng lupa nila. I'm not sure about this though.

But yes the Carino doctrine is more of a victory in paper. They still lost their land and courts are conveniently ignoring the doctrine so it is not being applied in similar cases.

Thanks :-)

Abeya, Carino, Madalang. Big names.

The ancestor of the Abeya family of Sagada are from Candon if I remember right.

And by the way, I heard an explanation from someone that the Carino ancestral property in Baguio is actually not his (Mateo's) property but his wife's. It was only that Igorot and American culture dictated that the husband is the symbolic owner of a real property so we ended up with a legal doctrine with his name as the basis for the giving of the native title of the land (where John Hay and the surrounding area is located) to him. Or was the title actually given to the Carino clan?

How sad, they recognize him as the owner but convert the property into a military RnR. Then much later, Ramos gave the rest of the surrounding area to squatters.
