Hi guys,

I'm not an Igorot but I've been a big boxing fan since I was a child in the 70s.

I read about the Rey Tam-Alexis Arguello fight in one of our local boxing magazines back in the late 70s and I could not even figure out how Tam looked in that fight (how his face looked, the attire he wore) because there was only one photo in the article and it was in low resolution black-and-white.

Pathetic isn't it?

I should say boxing fans are much much luckier today because of the technology.

Nonetheless the sports report left an impression in my mind because there were very few Filipinos challenging for world titles around that time.

I also remebered that when Arguello subsequently defeated
Rolando Navarette and Andy Ganigan, Rey Tam's name was often thrown in among the Nicaraguan's Filipino victims.

Anyways the Tam-Arguello fight is finally on youtube and all of us Pinoy boxing fans could witness this fight.

Cheers!

Cesar E.
Hi Lotch,
Thanks for your comment. It's good to know that there are other people inspired by Rey Tam. As I said in the post, I hope other Igorots will follow his lead. Thanks again :-)

I was with Rey Tam when he first started to go back into boxing - this time as a trainer, coach, adviser and a father to young aspiring boxers, at the beatriz emporium. I really think that he is now a changed man. Totally different from his old happy -go-lucky ways in the past, as told personally by him and the stories from older people who had watched and followed his exploits inside and outside the boxing ring.

In the gym, he was training boxers free of charge and that he welcomes anybody interested to excel in boxing.

By the way, with the help of countless samaritans, he was now able to establish a modest training ground in his house at Beckel, La Trinidad, Benguet. The gym continues to survive solely on donations, and the training sessions free to all interested boxers. So visit the gym, either as an interested boxer or a donor. Who knows, the next igorot boxing hero may come much sooner. . .

GO REY TAM GO. . . YOU CAN STILL REACH THE IGOROT DREAM IN BOXING, THIS TIME HOWEVER, THROUGH THE YOUNG ONES . . .
